"Responsible Teaching" -Julie Rems-Smario and Marla Hatrak
Teachers with knowledge about developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate and effective teaching approaches for each child may be the crux of the success of each student. We will discuss how political awareness of Deaf community issues will equip teachers who will be more able to relate to the Deaf students’ academic and social-emotional health.
"Shifting Paradigms, Pedagogy & Practice: Trauma-Informed, Culturally Responsive & Disability Positive Teaching Changes Everything" -Talila Lewis
Children with disability are the largest minority group in juvenile prisons because educators do not understand or apply intersectional principles to pedagogy or practice. This workshop will challenge participants to shift the education paradigm from rugged independence to compulsory interdependence; from zero tolerance to nonviolent & restorative justice principles; and from race & disability “neutral” to race and disability positive & responsive.
"How I Lead: The Impact of my Role in Education" -MeMe Ratliff
All teachers are leaders, but many have yet to realize their specific leadership strengths. From those new to teaching to those with global sway, every teacher leads in some capacity in or out of the classroom. Going Digital (11:20am-12:20pm)
"Using Twitter to Enhance Teacher Voice" -Heidi Givens
Educators are using social media platforms to engage with students, develop professionally, network with other teachers, and communicate about education reform. In this interactive introductory session, participants will learn about the power of Twitter, including tips on how to best maximize Twitter use and to participate in Twitter chats.
**Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop in order to experience Tweetdeck. Otherwise, at least a phone or tablet will be needed to access Twitter. Having a Twitter account before coming to this session will be helpful. If not, no worries. You will leave with one!
"Using Digital Tools to Support Student's Motivation and Engagement in the Classroom" -Alyssa Romano
In this interactive workshop, you will learn how to use four digital tools as a part of your classroom instruction in supporting students’ motivation and engagement through an ASL/English bilingual flipped classroom instructional strategy.
**Participants should bring a personal device, whether it be a laptop or iPad, and have four programs downloaded: Edmodo, iMovie, YouTube, and Weebly.
"ASL Resources: Putting it All Together" -Joey Baer
It is clear that many ASL Resources are being developed in past few years among many Deaf schools and programs. Often they are not shared because they are not organized, centralized, and/or educators do not know what is out there. Therefore, this will be an opportunity for participants to exchange ideas on how we can centralize our ASL Resources for our teachers of Deaf children.
